  • Students who participate in higher profiled athletic organizations while in college scored significantly lower than non-athlete groups on the Career Maturity Inventory and Career Development Inventory
  • Athletes invest too much of themselves into their athletic potential than into other necessary roles as a student
  • Focusing and emphasizing an athlete's athletic role distracted the students in making responsible decisions relating to the development of a career
  • Not all student athletes have a definite mindset of focusing on their athletic identities
  • Early Career Paths - Identifying certain desires or goals during undergraduate studies in order to pursue a certain career path.
  • Late Career Path - Those who are no longer interested in pursuing an amateur or professional athletic career, although in later years may apply previous knowledge from sports to find a suitable future career.
  • At what point can an individual be a successful student athlete?
  • What is require of a student to have an equal balance of both sports and academic?

TV will not turn your children into couch potatoes, say researchers

Database: Global Issues In Context
Title: TV will not turn your children into couch potatoes, say researchers
Interesting Facts:

  1. Television doesn't affect "fit" activity.
  2. Those who watch television more than average are just as active as other teens.
  3. Teens that watch TV, obviously, still have time for being active as well.
  4. Computer Games doesn't affect "fit" activity, either.
  5. Researchers got students to keep track of what they were doing every 15 minutes and were told to write it down.
  6. from 3 to 6:30 pm, are the most common times for activities other than TV and computer games.
  7. The most shocking fact is that on average, a student spends 40 minutes a day in motorized transport.
  8. They found that boys usually have 25 minutes of activity per day, but girls only do 16.
Questions:

  1. Does access to TV affect amount of activity per day?
  2. Does having a strict schedule reduce time watching TV?
  3. What, in TV, makes watching it so much more fun than doing another activity, for most people?

Show Jumping #3-Article

While researching, I found this website with some interesting facts:

Some cool things I learned:
  • Jumping horses resulted from the Enclosures Acts in England in the 18th century. Fields were required to be closed, and riders had to jump the fences in order to move from place to place on horseback.
  • In France, jumping became a popular sport, but the fences were scattered in a field so it was hard for spectators to view the entire competition.
  • In result, "Lepping" was created. This was a jumping competition inside an arena.
  • By 1900, most important shows had lepping classes.
  • The first big "lepping" or show-jumping competition was held at the Horse of the Year show in Olympia, England in 1907.
  • To form rules for the newly popular sport, officials formed the BSJA in 1925 to put some rules into action.
  • Similarly, in the United States, national competition rules were formed through the creation of the American Horse Show Association in 1917 (which later became the USEF).
  • A fun fact: before 1907, there were no penalties for refusals, so competitors were asked to stop at a fence or go around it to arouse the spectators.
  • Show Jumping became widely more popular with it addition to the Olympics in 1912.

Gas MPG and gas prices

-The car that gets the best miles per gallon ran by petrol is the Chevrolet Volt with a combined 60 MPG. 58 city, 62 highway
-The car with the highest mpg however is a Mitsubishi i-MiEV with 112 MPG.
-Lamborghini Murcielago gets the worst MPG for cars with only 8 city 13 highway. So the cost to own the chevy and mitsu is a lot cheaper. Especially with the cars being 1/20th the price with 10x the MPG.
-f the average person does 10,800 miles yearly in a chevy volt. They would buy a total of about 180 gallons of gas. In a lamborghini? 1,250 gallons of gas.The average price right now per gallon is $3.60 so with the volt you would save $3,852 on gas yearly.
My new article gave me some new info about my question.

How The Car Began.

The early automobile industry started around the 1900s. In 1893 J. Frank and Charles E. Duryea produced the first successful gasoline-powered automobile in the United States. They began commercial production of the Duryea car in 1896—the same year in which Henry Ford operated his first successful automobile in Detroit. The first automobile salesroom was opened in New York City in 1899 by Percy Owen.  Henry M. Leland and Henry Ford further developed mass production methods during the early 1900s.

How do automobiles differ when they are produced in different countries?

How the Car began? How has the car devolved since the beginning?
What Are the different styles and how are they chosen?
How is the technology different from car to car?
How do different countries make their cars?

Post #3: How has the car revolutionized over time?

http://www.motorwayamerica.com/content/mercedes-benz-marks-50-years-crash-testing-first-car

-Mercedes-Benz was one of the first car companies to really look into safety as an important factor to driving.
-In the 1920s, they invented safety door locks on cars
-On September 10, 1959, they conducted one of the first head-on collision crash test that was really the beginning of crash testing.
-Without crash test research in the 1950s, many people would still be dying in accidents today.
-Around the late 1930s, Mercedes-Benz engineers were mainly inventing and putting patents on over 2,500 inventions
-The first Mercedes-Benz cars in crash tests were compelled into objects with hot water rockets.
-After many crash tests, the materials in cars became softer to further absorb the energy involved in crashes.
-The first crash test dummies were not very advanced and did not simulate a real person very well.  Some companies used inflatables and dolls to simulate people.

3 Questions:
-Why did people take crash testing so seriously?
-How would cars be if safety wasn't in mind?
-What is being done to reduce accidents?

How has basketball evolved over time

HOW HAS THE GAME OF BASKETBALL EVOLVED OVER TIME?

-How has the dress of the players changed over time?

-How has the type of play evolved over time?

- How has the amount of races playing basketball changes since the begining of the game?

-How has the popularity of the game expanded around the world?

I already know that the game was created in 1889 by James Naismith and was first played with baskets. This is how the game was named basketball. I also know that the games popularity expanded greatlly in the 90's.

Sports and academics

Sports and Academics

  • School sports are directed to contribute to the overall education of students

  • Objective: citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, teamwork, respect, and health of students

  • Negative affects: trash talking, overtraining, injury, overemphasis on winning, violence during game play

  • Participating in sports positively affects behaviors in physical activity such as diet, smoking, illegal drug use, and reduced sexual intercourse (females)

  • Increase on travel programs which leads to long hours of travel away from studies

  • On the other hand, many well developed programs have also underlined the fact that grades and education standpoints are also very important.

Interscholastic- existing or conducted between many school
Intramural competition-  Existing or carried on within the bounds of an institution
Questions:  Can better health lead to a better education development?

Post #2- How have cars revolutionized throughout the years

Database Article: http://www.ausbcomp.com/~bbott/cars/carhist.htm

-The first true steam engine and internal combustion engine were made before the car itself.
-Steam cars were made before cars with internal combustion engines
-Steam-powered cars were extremely unreliable
-The first cars were only owned by wealthy individuals
-Around 1881, the Daimler Motor Company was making internal combustion engines (gas powered engines) for many different transportation methods
-Ford's first automobile would not be put up for sale until 1903
-In 1899, European designed cars were much more advanced that the American prototypes (and most can still say the same today)

3 Questions regarding future research:
-How safe was it to be in sn accident in older vehicles?
-What was the legal age to begin driving?
-Were there any driving lessons to figure out the complex controls of the car?

Key Facts:

  • Determination is a key factor in an athletes performance that pushes them to get better instead of stay at the same pace
  • An athlete's brain gives a lot of determination, which can improve performance
  • The brain gives you a little more endurance to make your overall time in runs better than before.
  • Athletes in mid-distance runs are using the techniques this man from Northwestern University has stated.
  • If your goal distance is too high, your brain gets stressed and gives up, which could result in an even worse performance.
  • Money will not improve an athletes performance; if they are offered money, they won't play any better than they did before.
  • The brain has extra stored energy that can be released if needed

How did the equestrian sport of Show Jumping begin and develop? (overall research question)

How did the equestrian sport of Show Jumping begin and develop?

To answer this overall question I will try to find out:
     1.  How the main branches of show-jumping (hunter/jumper, eventing, stadium jumping) evolved. Focus mainly on the development of the hunter and equitation
     2.  How did show-jumping become a competition sport?
     3.  How did fox hunting influence modern-day jumping sports? History of the fox hunt.
     4.  Did show-jumping originate in Europe? If so, how did it become popular in america?
     5.  Evolution of competition rules and modern day jumping equipment (saddles & bridles)

What I already know about the topic:
  • Show jumping evolved from the horseback fox hunt.
  • Jumping is one of the most popular equestrian sports.
  • There are different forms of show jumping, such as hunter and equitation (judged) and jumpers/stadium jumping (timed or clear round based)
  • Show Jumping didn't originate in the US (not sure where exactly)

How cars have changed the world

- How do cars help our troops, police, fire fighters, paramedics, ect?

What I already know about Cars and how they affect the world:
-There are 99 brands of cars in the world
-The first car ever made with a ignition key and a stick shift was a 1932 Cadillac
-the first gasoline car was made in 1898
-Best selling vehicle is a Ford F-150
-The most expensive new street legal car right now is a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 SS. $2,500,000

What role does the sport tennis play in many different cultures?

How did tennis develope in cultures?
How did athletes come from tennis?
What country started the sport tennis?
How did the people view playing tennis?

How do sports affect a person life?

Three detailed questions I am research:
  1. Do sports keep a person from trouble?
  2. Do sports positively or negatively affect a person acedemically?
  3. Do sports build character?
What I already know:
The only source I have at this time is from my own personal experiences. Addressing my second research question, before playing competive baseball, my grades were much lower than they currently are today. I believe that participating in competive sports forced me to start establishing priorities. Since I love playing sports, playing competive became one of my main priorities.  What motivated me to do well and study hard in school were the rules that my parents enforced. If I did not do well in school, then I would not be able to play sports any further.

What Makes Athletes So Good At What They Do?

1.) What, in athlete's training routines, make them improve so much at what they do
2.) Find out the difference in the genetics of the athletes that make them different from the average athlete

What I already know about Athletes:
1.) They are determinated to improve
2.) They want to be the best
3.) They train very hard
4.) They usually have a coach or trainer

How has the car revolutionized throughout the years?

I will answer this with these sub-questions:
Are hybrids more efficient than diesels?  Why do companies make super cars?  What was the first car to have the normal setup we take today as normal?  What company made the first automobile?  Who made the first mass-produced car?  What is the largest car company in the world?  What is being done to make cars safe in car accidents?  How many cars are there in the entire world?  Etc.

I already know that cars have changed significantly present-day from the first one that was assembled.  The first car with an internal combustion engine was created by Mercedes-Benz.  Also, the largest automaker in the world is General Motors. second is Toyota, and third is Volkswagen.  The best-sellng car is a Ford F-150 and the best-selling passenger car is the Toyota Corolla.

How does someone become a world class athlete? How are they chosen to be in the Olympics?

To answer the overall research question I will try to find out.

1.Are athletes born or created?
2. How do athletes train for these sports?
3.Are most athletes real or do they use performance enhancements?

This is what I already know about this topic, I want to find out:
I know that many of the worlds best athletes compete in the Olympics. But, I am wondering if these athletes have trained so hard to get their or do they have natural talent? Also, do the most successful athletes work hard or use performance enhancements?

What inspires people to play different sports?

Does family influence kids to play certain sports?
How much of a roll does the money factor play in sports?
Why do Professional players get payed so much?
Should college kids get paid for playing for the school due to the income?
