This article is credible because...
  • According to website:  "Greenacres Stud is a member of the British Show Jumping Association and the Trakehner Breeders Fraternity."
  • They are breeders of Warmblood and Trakehner horses, which are among the best show jumpers.
  • In order to be a member of the official show jumping association of Britain, the author of this page must be very knowledgeable on the subject.

Some new info I learned...
  • In the beginning, judges differed on how they criticized riders. Some judged for style and others on skill. Sometimes, the riders with the least rails or refusals didn't even place!
  • Prior to the introduction of the FEI, each country had its own rules. The FEI is a worldwide organization that changed that by creating universal rules for competition.
  • There were many flaws with early judging. Riders were not penalized for circling between obstacles or even refusing to jump a fence.
  • The first jumping seat was not very forward for safety purposes. They emphasized a "backwards seat." Jumping was taught in cavalry schools.
  •  Federico Caprilli reinvented jumping by changing the jump seat from "backwards" with a long stirrup to a shorter stirrup and sitting forward. This made it easier on the horse to jump.
  • Fillers were introduced for under the fences once the horses realized it was much easier to go under the jumps instead of over.
  • Most of the first jumping competitors were from the military. Many competitions were divided between military people and civilians.
