Bailey, R. (2006). Physical Education and Sport in Schools: A review of benefits and outcomes, The Journal of School Health, Volume 76, 8, pp397 – 401 (5).

  • Through sports, young children are able to be exposed to develop qualities such as: honesty, self control, teamwork, and awareness for others around them.
  • Sports also helps children understand how to deal with the fact of losing and winning, along with handling competition.
  • These traits are essential to becoming successful in the very competitive world we have today.
  • Physical education and development that run parallel to sports promotes healthy habits that lead to long-term success in the future.
  • Through the popularity of sports, people are attracted into educational and physical develop programs that strongly emphasize the importance of academics in athletes.
  • United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees use sports and physical activities to help promote young people of refugee camps across the world become interested in school and educational programs.
  • Personal: Within my baseball organization, there are many guidelines and expectations that are required of players. Maintaining a 3.0 GPA while being an active participant in school activities are just some of the factors that are incorporated in being a member of the team. \
  • What makes sports so popular?

  2. You made some good points here such as how sports help people deal with the fact of losing or winning. I agree with this because the more I win or lose in a game. The better I handle the cituation of the outcome.

  3. I disagree with your statement about how through the popularity of sports people are emphasizing the importance of education. Due to in my research I found that colleges are cutting non-commercialized sports and people are getting mad because they are spending money on scholarships instead of for kids with a great education.

  5. The comment of Physical education and development that run parallel to sports promotes healthy habits that lead to long-term success in the future. This comment made me realize that some sports can help tremendously in the develoment of childrens' lives. It made me realize this because such sports like wreslting takes a lot of dicipline with cutting weight and eating right so you don't gain weight and you can still wrestle at your weight class.
