How have cars revolutionized over time? Post #4

*I took this photo with Gran Turismo 5: The Real Driving Simulator*
Article credibility:  Created by Ann Job of MSN Autos.  She gets her information from government vehicle ratings and other sources stated in the article.  The article is only a few years old (2007 and after), so many of the facts are still reliable today.
What I learned (or understood more):
*Many vehicles (mostly hybrid-electric cars such as the Toyota Prius) are not rated correctly as a real-world driver would use the car.
*Although diesel-powered cars have terrible emission ratings, they kick back at hybrid-electric cars in fuel economy.
*Most hybrid cars save you on gas prices, but do not save you money in the long run.  It could take over five years to actually see payback money for your car's "efficiency."
*Diesel cars are much cheaper than hybrids which in turn saves you a lot more money and fuel usage in most cases.
*You do not need a hybrid or diesel car to be efficient because many small normal gas-powered cars deliver similar mileage.
*The car you drive doesn't always depend on your gas mileage.  It also depends on how you drive (how much you brake, how fast you drive, how much weight the car is carrying, etc.)
*Diesel-powered cars are not as popular in the U.S. as they are in Europe because they are seen as filthy and noisy in our culture.  But really, modern turbochargers and catalytic converters are making diesels almost as clean as a normal gas-powered car.
*Diesel engines churn out massively more pound feet of torque than a conventional hybrid or gas-powered engine.

Three things I would like to know or receive clarification on:
*What exactly does torque and horsepower benefit to you in a car?
*Why are many people attempting to be environmentally friendly with cars?  There are many other things to improve on.
*Why do the prices of cars differ so much?

  1. I like the way you are comparing the different types of efficiency between the different types of cars. The debate between this is actually very big. Look at prius vs M3 top gear.

    1. I've seen that video before. Top Gear does a good job sometimes at showing real-world conditions that the government and environmentalists leave out. (Yes, I am replying a month and a hlaf late)
